Synopsis
Awa and her mother are slaves on a plantation where Awa collects sugar cane. The plantation owner is visited by a family from Copenhagen, where the daughter wants a black maid. Suddenly Awa finds herself far from her mother and St Thomas in Copenhagen, where she has to navigate a dual role as the mistress' confidante and servant maid - and where she is sometimes seen as a trophy and other times as a freak.
