Synopsis

Inception meets Blade Runner in Boris Hansen's sci-fi fantasy thriller, set in a near future where you can travel into books as if they were physical realities - and change them from the inside.

For Olivia Alby, being a fiction agent is not exactly a dream job. She and her teammates are tasked to travel into books and protect their protagonists and plots from intruding agents. It’s a dangerous job and on top of that, she's stuck on a dysfunctional team with a bunch of untrained individuals, who have little in common. The only consolation is that the pay is good, and Olivia needs the money, if she's ever going to realise her dream of escaping her past.

But when a mission goes wrong, Olivia and her teammates are drawn into a global conspiracy. The world's biggest governments and corporations have realized that when books can change people, there is incredible power potential in being able to change books. Unidentified enemies have big plans to abuse fictional technology, and to unravel who they are up against, Olivia and her team are forced to learn to collaborate. Throughout the four tomes that make up the Silent World series, we follow Olivia and her team travelling in and out of the fictional worlds of books in search of answers…

With humour, suspense and great empathy, Boris Hansen tells a story about corrupt governments, fantastic books and unique friendships.

Personal note from the author

‘The Silent Worlds series is my take on an intense suspense series with a unique twist, because literature is used as a meta-layer, playground and battlefield,’

Were you inspired by real events when you came up with the plot of the Silent Worlds series?

‘If this series had been written ten years ago, it would have been different. Now it's hard to write a science fiction story set in our near future without at least recognising climate change, for example.’

‘When you're also writing a story where culture has literally become a battlefield, it's also hard not to consider the anti-democratic currents of the time and the potential of misinformation when you think about what would actually happen if you could travel into stories and change them.’

He himself would travel into the sci-fi classic 1984 by George Orwell if he could choose. And what would he change?

‘At the very end, I would buy Winston Smith a cake or a teddy bear.’
