The Danish Arts Foundation supports production, translation and promotion of Danish literature abroad

Here’s how it works:

On the 1st March and the 15th August, the Danish Arts Foundation offers the option for international publishers to apply for grants to support their publication of Danish literature.

Applications may be made for:

  • Translation from Danish to your language
  • Production costs
  • Events for Danish authors, illustrators and translators intended to promote their work in your country
  • Research travel for foreign translators and publishers travelling to Denmark
  • Sample translations
  • Mentor support for translators
  • Other literary projects

Here’s a list of the publishers who received grants after the last deadline on the 15th August, as well as an indication of the amounts granted:

  • Bulgarian: EMAS – 21 WAYS TO DIE by Sarah Engell – DKK 5000 (EUR 670)
  • Chinese Simplified: United Sky – TALES FROM THE SKY by Gertrude Kiel – DKK 10000 (EUR 1345)
  • English World: IDW – MARIE CURIE by Frances Andreasen Østerfelt et al. – DKK 10000 (EUR 1345)
  • English World: Centrala – LONELY JOURNEY by Ida Rørholm Davidsen – DKK 15000 (EUR 2015)
  • Faroese: Bokadeild – GRIMM I by Kenneth Bøgh Andersen, Benni Bødker and John Kenn Mortensen – DKK 15000 (EUR 2015)
  • German: Klett Kinderbuch – MOGENS AND MAHDI by Kim Fupz Aakeson and Rasmus Bregnhøi – DKK 2500 + DKK 10000 (EUR 1680)
  • Italian: Galucci – TALES FROM THE SKY by Gertrude Kiel – DKK 14900 (EUR 2000)
  • Italian: Gallucci – THE TIME CHASE by Gertrude Kiel – DKK 22350 (EUR 3000)
  • Japanese: Fuyumi Nakamura (translator, sample translation) – TALES FROM THE SKY by Gertrude Kiel – DKK 3000 (EUR 400)
  • Polish: Media Rodzyna – MARIE CURIE by Frances Andreasen Østerfelt et al. – DKK 5000 (EUR 670)

In other words, if you are contemplating publishing any of the Danish books on the Babel-Bridge website, it is worth keeping this option in mind.
